Social Media Guilt

That old familiar haunt....Guilt.. Not me, not anymore.

Hi everyone, (yes I always open my posts like I am talking to friends because after all.... I am! )

Do you suffer from Social Media Guilt? It's a real thing you know. I did for a long time. Not sure what Social Media Guilt is? Ah - ha my little kiwis let me explain.

Social Media Guilt is when you follow someone, subscribe to someone, friend someone because you feel, well, you feel you have too because after all they follow you right, they like and love your posts right, they watch your YouTube videos right? So of course you have to be reciprocal don't you? Yeah, I used to feel that way also but the answer this question is a big fat....NO.

I was big on doing this on Facebook and YouTube. I felt that just because so and so liked my posts and watched my videos I must also do the same for them. Then, a few months ago I realized that I was literally forcing myself to see and read things I had zero interest in or things that made me angry or sad. The truth is, I happen to like a lot of the people I read and watch on YouTube but that doesn't mean I need to spend precious time going down that social media black hole if one, I don't like the content and two, just to show my loyalty.

Last month I decided to let go of all my "social media guilt". I unsubscribed to many YouTube channels, unfriended many on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I have seen changes already. Positive changes. Firstly, I am actually reading and watching content I enjoy. Secondly, the time wasted on social media has dropped drastically for me leaving me time to do the things that are really important to me and bring me happiness. Lastly, just because I may have unsubbed or unfriended doesn't mean I don't like said person. It means I am taking control of what I spend my time on and looking after my emotional health.

What about you? Still dealing with "Social Media Guilt" or have you let it go? Please share I'd love to read your story.

  1. Yeah, that's a tough one. I struggle with it, too, but have gotten better about it.

    1. Hi Kimberly, it is tough.. For a lot of people.. We feel we need to have this loyalty or they may get mad at us.. It took me a LONG time to realize that I didn't "have" to do what I didn't want too and it had nothing to do with no liking the creator..Takes time.. Be patient with yourself :).. Thank you so much Kimberly for coming by and chatting :)

  2. I don't know if I have ever suffered from that. I just read and listen to things that interest me. If people become too negative or weird I stop listening.

  3. Hi Robyn! Long time but I agree wholeheartedly with you. I don't really have guilt about anything at my age..lol! With me it's not personal but I stopped going on Facebook because during the election it just got too nasty. I steer away from all negativity. Everyone has a bad day now and then but some use it to 'unload' all their 'issues' and I am not a therapist and there is a reason for that! LOL! So, I watch, listen to and read uplifting things. No violence, no negativity, whining or complaining anything. I am a happy camper! I have even been criticized for being 'too cheerful' so I stay away from most people and I am much better for it. You are definitely on the right track! Happy Halloween!

    1. Hi Sam!.. I couldn't agree more with everything you said.. I just don't want the negativity in my life anymore. Life is a struggle for a lot and I put myself in that category but I want to feel happy when and where I can and I guess I have finally reached a point in my life that I am refusing to allow anyone or anything steal my joy.. Thank you so much for coming over Sam and chatting. It's good to see you! Happy Halloween!
